Welcome
James Hagerty was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, and attended St Bede’s Grammar School.
He trained to be a teacher and spent his professional career as a teacher, a lecturer, and an inspector of schools and colleges.
His final teaching post was Headteacher of St Bede’s Grammar School, Bradford.
Dr Hagerty holds degrees from St Mary’s University (Hon B.Ed), York University (BA, MPhil) and Leeds University (MA, PhD).
He has held Schoolmaster Fellowships at Downing College, Cambridge, and Keble College, Oxford.
He is a Fellow of Leeds Trinity University and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. In 2007 he was made a Knight of St Gregory the Great by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
Publications
Throughout his career, James Hagerty has maintained a strong interest in historical research alongside his teaching commitments. His first publication was his undergraduate thesis and since then he has published numerous articles and books mainly on Catholic history. He has published monographs, contributed to scholarly collections, co-authored books, and has edited a major history of Global Catholicism. His most recent research has been into Catholic chaplaincy in the British armed forces.
